The S-85 is a four band single conversion general coverage HF receiver with electrical bandspread calibrated for the 80 to 10 meter ham bands. Introduced in 1954. It is similar to but was less expensive than the SX-99. The S-85 and SX-99 each have 8 tubes, 7 of which are identical in both sets. The S-85 has a built-in speaker, the SX-99 uses an external speaker. The SX-99 has several features that the S-85 lacks, including crystal filter, S-meter, and antenna trimmer control. The S-85 shown above has had an S-meter added.
